Notes

  • This game is so long! I spent years only completing the story lines. There are still a lot to explore. Just the epilogue chapters is 10 hours long, longer than a typical DLC.
  • The visual is still beautiful after 7 years. Seems no need to further improve any more. Only character rendering lacks. Human face and skin now seem quite off.
  • The gameplay is quite fun! Shooting and hunting part alone, and there are more.
  • I understand some design choices to force players to slow down and get immersed in the game.
  • I’m also very happy to see America in the 19th: the plantations, railroads, horses, wagons, mines, oil fields, factories, towns and cities. Some features are still around us after 100 years. Some were lost, like Indians.
    • The Indian area is called Wapiti in the game. There is a real Wapiti area near Yellowstone National Park.
  • Ultimately it is a Rockstar game so that the main characters are gangsters and outlaws who are skilled killers. But we players tend to think we are good people. The game has already done quite well reconciling this conflict. But it remains a problem that sometimes bugs me, extracts me out of the game, and reminds me that this is a video game with super exaggerated narrative.
    • In a way, the narrative is like 水浒传 (2011). So grassroot, yet so classical. In keen eyes, it reveals the whole truth of their times.
